Northland’s federal school code is 038725. Below are instructions for completing the Financial Aid application process:

In order for Northland to receive your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) report and to process your grant, you must visit our Virtual Financial Aid Office (VFAO) (this off-site page requires the latest java download from www.java.com to load properly) to complete the application process.

After you link to the VFAO, please complete the following steps:

1. Register for a login and password. (If you’ve registered for a VFAO pin in the past, you still need to re-register on this new site.)

2. Follow the link in the center of the page to the “Student Interview Center.” During the interview, refer to the FAQ’s or “hover help” in the right-hand column for tips and instructions.

a.) If you plan to apply for a Federal Student Stafford, indicate your requested amount when prompted. The interview currently quotes loan amounts for independent students. Since most of you are dependent students, please note the annual loan caps. Freshman: $3,500; Sophomore: $4,500; Junior and Senior: $5,500.
b.) If you already have an MPN on file with SallieMae, simply indicate your requested loan amount on the VFAO interview and we will process a new loan through SallieMae.
c.) The VFAO provides a link to SallieMae’s OpenNet service, which allows you to apply for a Student Stafford loan. This is provided for your convenience but in no way limits your privilege to choose a different lending institution.

3. After you submit your interview, you will receive an estimated Financial Plan. As noted above, the Financial Plan quotes loan caps for an independent student. Since most of you are dependent students, please review the government caps on Stafford Loans. Any loans requested above these amounts must be through a Parent PLUS Loan.
