Over-all,
the biblical principles are that you should always dress with the
ultimate goal of glorifying God and maintaining a clear distinction
between a man and a women. People's attention should be drawn to the
inner spirit and character rather than to the body. With these
principles in mind, students should dress with discernment and select
clothing that is modest, appropriate for the occasion, and distinct
according to their gender.
Based on various biblical
principles, Northland asks that some brands and types of clothing not
be worn. Among these are clothing sold by Abercrombie and Fitch
companies. This guideline is due to the association with a worldly
philosophy communicated by the loose moral content contained in the
company’s advertising.
When arriving on campus, feel free to
wear normal traveling attire. Specific guidelines for attire will be
given during registration. To help you know what to shop for before you
come, some informaiton is listed below.
Ladies’ Appearance and Dress
Dress Attire
Semi-formal
or dressy clothing (no denim) is appropriate for Sunday church
services, Artist Series events, banquets, and other occasions. Nylons
and dress-type shoes are required for this attire. Sleeveless clothing
must come to the edge of the shoulder or should have a sweater or
jacket as an accessory.
Classroom Attire
Dresses
and skirts that come to mid-knee length or longer when a lady is
standing or sitting (including slits and openings) are appropriate for
classes, special services, and special events. Tops should be
loose-fitting, distinctly feminine, and long enough to cover the
midriff.
Casual Attire
Feminine
and loose-fitting knits and sweatshirts are appropriate for casual
attire. All divided garments (such as loose-fitting shorts or culottes)
must be mid-knee length or longer when a lady is standing or sitting
and must have a degree of fullness measuring from the outside of the
mid-thigh to the garment’s outer edge. Loose-fitting dress slacks are
appropriate for some occasions; classic blue jeans are allowed only
inside the dorm.
Appearance
Hairstyles
must be neat, distinctly feminine, and not faddish. Tattoos and body
piercings are not allowed. All earrings must be worn in the lower ear
lobe, and no more than two pairs may be worn at a time. Thin or
masculine tops or tops with inappropriately placed openings or
offensive wording, symbols, or pictures may not be worn at any time.
Men’s Appearance and Dress
Dress Attire
Semi-formal
or dressy clothing is appropriate for Sunday church services, Artist
Series events, banquets, and other occasions. Suit/sport coats, ties,
dress shirts, dress slacks, and dress socks and shoes are appropriate
for this attire.
Classroom Attire
Only
dress shirts, dress-type pants, and ties are appropriate for classroom
attire. Ties are required only during classes before lunch.
Casual Attire
Neat,
collared sport shirts, casual pants or jeans, and socks and shoes are
appropriate casual attire for off-campus trips, athletic events, and
on-campus activities. Warm-ups, sweats, T-shirts, or gym wear is
appropriate only when students are participating in indoor or outdoor
athletic events.
Appearance
Men
students should be clean-shaven at all times; mustaches should be
trimmed. Hair should be trimmed and tapered in the back. Hairlines
should be blended with no distinct or obvious lines. Hair should not
fall below the tops of the eyebrows, cover the tops of the ears, or go
below the top of the collar. Sideburns may extend to the bottom of the
ear hole. Dyed hair, bleached hair, and faddish haircuts are
unacceptable. Tattoos, earrings, chains, necklaces, anklets, and body
piercings are not allowed. Shorts, tank tops, bib-type pants, fatigues,
clothing with color extremes or excessive fading, ripped or torn
clothing, and clothing that draws inappropriate attention or with
inappropriately placed openings or offensive wording, symbols, or
pictures may not be worn at any time.
