Northland Baptist Bible College
desires to make Christian education both accessible and affordable for
you and your family. We also desire that you graduate without a debt so
large that it could hinder your ability to assume the ministry to which
God has called you. For this reason, we make every endeavor to keep
room, board, and tuition costs as low as possible.
We believe that college costs are a family responsibility. However,
it is also our desire to partner with you by providing financial
assistance as we are able. We also firmly believe that where God calls,
He provides and seeks to use financial needs to draw us closer to Him
in a daily, personal relationship, thereby teaching us about His
faithful provision. For many years, God has allowed us to provide
different internal scholarships such as our Ministry and Academic
Scholarships. These are explained in greater detail on the Scholarships page .
We are now pleased to be able to offer additional financial assistance
to you through the U.S. Title IV programs that will be in concert with
our core values and will at the same time benefit your ability to use
legitimate resources. You can read about the programs we participate in
by going to the Federal Assistance page .
With a full Pell Grant, which many of our students receive, our
Ministry or Academic Scholarship, and a low-pressure Work Study job,
your out-of-pocket expense for room, board, and tution could be as low
as between $5,000-$6,000 per year. By investigating other grant and
scholarship options on websites such as www.fastweb.com, you could see an even further reduction.
Concerning Loans
Over the years, Northland has had a “no-debt policy.” The goal
behind this policy was to help our students graduate debt-free,
allowing them to immediately enter the ministry. However, as time has
passed, families have continually asked NBBC to allow them the freedom
to use all of the resources available to help them pay for college. We
still believe that God can and does miraculously provide money for
school bills, but it is not our intention to put God in a box and to
try to dictate to families how God should work in their individual
circumstances. Since it is ultimately the responsibility of the student
and his or her family to decide these matters in the light of God’s
Word and the Holy Spirit’s leading, we will defer to them. At the same
time, we will also consistently sound a warning against excessive debt
for those going into the ministry.
With this in mind, Northland is now participating in the Federal
Family Education Loan Program which includes Stafford subsidized and
unsubsidized loans as well as the Parent Plus loan program. This is the
only Federal loan program we will participate in. In accordance with
our beliefs, this program seeks to place reasonable caps on the amount
a student can borrow and allows parents to carry a large portion of the
responsibility by making low-interest loans available to them for up to
the cost of education. You can read more about this program and its
advantages by clicking here.
Finally, regardless of what students, parents, and pastors decide
concerning the financing of educational expenses, our heartfelt desire
is that they would carefully consider any incurring of debt in light of
a biblical philosophy of stewardship. In whatever financial counseling
we do with our students, we will continue to put a strong emphasis upon
God-dependence and will caution them not to mount up a heavy debt load.
We still reserve the right not to certify a loan or to certify it for
less than the amount requested if we feel that the loan would not be in
the best interest of the student’s future ministry. If you have
questions or comments, please direct them to our Financial Aid office
by sending e-mail to
financialaid@nbbc.edu
or by calling us at 1-888-4-Northland, ext. 3150.
Federal Financial Aid Application Process
Northland’s federal school code is 038725. Below are instructions for
completing the Financial Aid application process:
In order for Northland to receive your Free Application for Federal
Student Aid (FAFSA) report and to process your grant, you must visit
our Virtual Financial Aid Office (VFAO) (this off-site page requires the latest java download from www.java.com to load properly) to complete the application process.
After you link to the VFAO, please complete the following steps:
1. Register for a login and password. (If you’ve registered for a VFAO
pin in the past, you still need to re-register on this new site.)
2. Follow the link in the center of the page to the “Student Interview Center.” During the interview, refer to
the FAQ’s or “hover help” in the right-hand column for tips and
instructions.
a.) If you plan to apply for a Federal Student Stafford, indicate your requested amount when prompted. The interview currently quotes loan amounts for independent students. Since most of you are dependent students, please note the annual loan caps. Freshman: $3,500; Sophomore: $4,500; Junior and Senior: $5,500.
b.) If you already have an MPN on file with SallieMae, simply indicate your requested loan amount on the VFAO interview and we will process a new loan through SallieMae.
c.) The VFAO provides a link to SallieMae’s OpenNet service, which allows you to apply for a Student Stafford loan. This is provided for your convenience but in no way limits your privilege to choose a different lending institution.
3. After you submit your interview, you will receive an estimated Financial Plan. As noted above, the Financial Plan quotes loan caps for an independent student. Since most of you are dependent students, please review the government caps on Stafford Loans. Any loans requested above these amounts must be through a Parent PLUS Loan. Click here to apply for a PLUS Loan through SallieMae.
Note: To use the Financial Aid Estimator, you will need to enter the
OPEID, which is Northland's federal school code (038725) followed by
two zeros.
- Maximum Pell for the 2007-2008 Award Year = $4,310, based on your EFC as determined by FAFSA.
- If you are a dependent undergraduate student, you can borrow annually up to the following:
- Freshman: $3,500
- Sophomore: $4,500
- Junior & Senior: $5,500
- If you are an independent undergraduate student or a dependent student whose parents are unable to get a PLUS Loan, you can borrow annually up to the following:
- Freshman: $7,500 (only $3,500 of this amount may be in subsidized loans)
- Sophomore: $8,500 (only $4,500 of this amount may be in subsidized loans)
- Junior & Senior: $10,500 (only $5,500 of this amount may be in subsidized loans)
- Generally, if you are a graduate student, you can borrow up to $18,500 each academic year. (Only $8,500 of this amount may be in subsidized Stafford Loans.)
Note:
The amounts given above are the maximum yearly amounts you can borrow
in both subsidized and unsubsidized loans. You might receive less than
these amounts if you receive other financial aid that is used to cover
a portion of your cost of attendance or if you have met your aggregate
maximum.
